New coach, same culture for men’s tennis under Awuy

After spending the last two seasons as assistant coach of , Clifton Awuy is stepping into a new role as head coach as former Head Coach Robin Goodman steps down to pursue another opportunity in the industry.
Awuy, previously a head coach with the Santa Clara women’s program from 2022-23, was part of a highly successful run with the Tigers. He helped Pacific reach top 60 national rankings in each of the last two seasons and assisted the program to a tie for second place in this year’s final West Coast Conference standings.
“I’m super excited for this opportunity. A lot of the foundation has already been set with the Tigers’ men’s tennis program, and I want to keep the same culture Robin created here,” Awuy said. “We’ve done very well the last two years, and I’m looking forward to building on that momentum.”
Awuy, from San Jose, California, spent two years at Santa Clara where he began as a volunteer assistant coach with the men's program in 2021-22 before taking the helm of the women's program. Awuy and Goodman connected during West Coast Conference match ups between the Tigers and the Broncos.
“I couldn’t be happier to see Clif take over as the new head coach at Pacific,” Goodman said. “He’s poured so much into this program, and there’s nobody more deserving to lead it forward. I’m proud of what we’ve built together and confident that Pacific men’s tennis is in great hands.”
Awuy previously spent 16 years as director of tennis at Thompkins Tennis Academy in Fremont, California, working with professional and International Tennis Federation junior competitors.
"Coach Awuy has dedicated his entire life to the sport of tennis,” said Director of Athletics Adam Tschuor. “He has experience coaching the game at several different levels and played a large role in our highly successful turnaround the last two years here at Pacific. His work ethic and dedication to the student-athletes make him very deserving of his opportunity, and I'm excited to see what's to come for our men's tennis program in the upcoming years."
Awuy had a significant influence on several student-athletes who are expected to return next season, including Christof Schaertlin Coffey ’27, a marketing major who was named to the 2025 WCC All-Academic First-Team and the All-Conference Second-Team in doubles with Ran Amar ’25, a finance major.
“Coach Awuy has a lot of knowledge of tennis and has definitely been a huge help on the mental side of tennis. He has a very calm demeanor which helps us remain calm as a team during matches,” said Schaertlin Coffey, who was recently named the Pacific Student-Athlete Advisory Committee co-president for 2025-26. “I believe our team culture will remain the same with him as the head coach, and we’ll have the same family-feel, which was one of the reasons we’ve been successful the last two years.”
Awuy said the goals and expectations remain the same for the upcoming year and the bar will not be lowered.
“We’re absolutely going to be fighting to achieve the same goals as the past two years and our standards will not be changed. We have the best tennis facility in the WCC here with the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center, and there’s no reason why we can’t remain successful. Our student-athletes have really bought into the process we created here at Pacific and have worked really hard to get our program to where it is right now,” Awuy said.
