Washington National Primate Research Center

Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC)
I managed the redesign of the WaNPRC's public website in spring of 2010 and staff website in fall of 2009. I started at the WaNPRC in June 2009 and work there full-time as an Information Operations Specialist. I maintain our websites, write research highlights, put together our weekly staff newsletter and coordinate a variety of projects as the organization evolves to meet the needs of biomedical research.

UW College of Engineering

University of Washington (UW) College of Engineering (CoE)
I led the redesign of public websites for the Chemical Engineering (ChemE) and Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) departments at the UW. The ChemE website was built using a Drupal installation provided by the CoE. The MSE website was built using Dreamweaver. I worked for the departments from December 2007 to May 2009 and also wrote and designed the Catalyst and Roberts Hall Review alumni newsletters. See below for a few articles I wrote:

Memo from Management to seniors: expect the unexpected - Danilo Pozzo, a UW assistant professor of chemical engineering, redesigned the ChemE 437 senior lab course to better prepare students for challenging jobs in an evolving industry.

Bulls eye on clean energy for developing world - Tricia Bull, a UW doctoral student in materials science and engineering, visited India in December 2008 to study clean energy.

Luscombe uses peer review to teach writing to undergraduates - Christine Luscombe, a UW associate professor of materials science and engineering, used part of her $495,000 CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation to develop a science writing program for undergraduates.

From mother of pearl to mother of invention - Mehmet Sarikaya, a UW professor of materials science and engineering, is a key figure in the developing field of molecular biomimetics.

Northwest Science Writers Association

Northwest Science Writers Association (NSWA)
I redesigned NSWA's website in fall of 2010 using WordPress as a content management system, enabling NSWA's board to post and edit content without extensive knowledge of HTML code. The redesigned website also features an interactive calendar of science events, a Twitter feed of NSWA news and a ScienceWire blog highlighting recent writing by members. I joined NSWA in April 2008.

"Matt knows how crucial listening is to designing for a group. Our growing science nonprofit needed to allow multiple leaders to post editorial content, and Matt designed an events calendar for us with our needs in the forefront. He showed great patience in a group-training exercise to present the toolbox to the leadership. Matt understands the dynamic nature of design today. He refines and tweaks, and our membership benefits."
~ Sally James, NSWA president (2011)

GeologyWriter.com - Writing by David B. Williams

GeologyWriter.com - Writing by David B. Williams
In summer of 2011, I built a website for David B. Williams, a Seattle-based writer focusing on geology and natural history. The website features information about David's books, links to his articles, a blog with stories and photographs from his adventures in the United States and abroad, and more. David is the author of "Stories in Stone: Travels through Urban Geology," a finalist for the 2010 Washington State Book Awards.

"Working with Matt was a pleasure. He was understanding, patient, and responsive. I especially appreciated how he was able to transfer all the information from my old blog and website and make that material work on the new site."
~ David B. Williams

Greater Seattle Morehouse College Alumni Association

Greater Seattle Morehouse College Alumni Assn. (GSMCAA)
In winter of 2009, I worked with Charles McLien III, GSMCAA president, to design and build a website for the Chapter that he could maintain following launch. I also helped the Chapter establish Facebook and Twitter presences and meet with Charles regularly to answer questions about how to expand the Chapter's reach on the Web. Morehouse College is the alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Spike Lee.

"Matt designed an exceptional website for our Chapter. He was able to turn our initial concept into a reality. Not only was he willing to assist with the design, but the content as well."
~ Charles McLien, GSMCAA president

The Wandering Cafe

The Wandering Cafe
In spring of 2011, I redesigned a website for The Wandering Cafe in Seattle. The cafe's new website features updated menus, background information on staff, lists of supported venues and vendors, an online events calendar, a blog and more.

"Matt's a rockstar! Not only does he go the extra mile(s) to ensure that the end result is perfect, his meticulous and concise communications during the creative process are an enormous help to someone who (like me) doesn't know web programming from a hole in the ground. Thanks, Matt!"
~ Heather Immoor, head chef

American Friends of WOTR

American Friends of WOTR (AFOW)
In winter of 2010, I redesigned a website for the AFOW. The group supports the Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR), a nonprofit organization that aims to reduce poverty by mobilizing the self-help capacities of individuals and communities to regenerate the eco-spaces and watersheds they live in.

"Matt did an amazing job in designing and launching our website. He worked closely with us to determine our needs and then designed a really attractive and feature-rich website. Matt was incredibly professional and creative in his approach, attentive to our needs, and timely in delivery. It was a pleasure working with him!"
~ Ron Fernandes, AFOW president
