Dugoni School Celebrates 30 Years of Senior Smiles Health Fair

Three decades ago, the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry held its first health fair for older adults on its campus, which was located in San Francisco鈥檚 Pacific Heights neighborhood at the time.
On April 26, the Dugoni School reached a milestone when it held its 30th annual Senior Smiles and Wellness Health Fair, drawing nearly 150 attendees. On its campus now located in downtown San Francisco, the fair provided free dental screenings, diabetes screenings and oral cancer screenings, as well as hearing screenings and consultations on balance, flexibility, core strength and fall prevention, and other community health resources.
This event was made possible thanks to a team of enthusiastic school volunteers, particularly members of the dental school鈥檚 Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program, who were joined by students and faculty from the 香蕉传媒 School of Health Sciences audiology and physical therapy programs.
鈥淚t was an amazing experience collaborating with faculty and ensuring seamless communication among the students and seniors to deliver quality care in a compassionate and efficient manner,鈥 said Eeshah Ahmed, DDS Class of 2026. 鈥淎s a second-year student, this role enhanced my leadership, community service skills and deepened my understanding of geriatric medical and dental care. We could not have executed this event without the support from our faculty, staff and students!"
Community partners at the event also included the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services and UC Berkeley's Volunteer Health Interpreters Organization, which provides free health interpretation and translation services for low-English proficiency populations in the Bay Area. Promotional support for the event was provided by the .
"This event opened my eyes to the potential we have to make a difference in our community,鈥 said Lena Tang, DDS Class of 2026. 鈥淲hile organizing it was challenging, seeing all of the seniors express their appreciation and how well taken care of they felt made it worth it to me."
"Being able to provide these services and other resources to the seniors within our community was such a rewarding and impactful experience,鈥 added Lynn Sasaki, DDS Class of 2026. 鈥淚 am so excited to see how Dugoni continues to expand this event in years to come!"
